Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of prime hoggs had a much-improved trade this week with all buyers very keen to purchase and a fresh face around the ring look for hoggs. An overall market average of 192p/kg was achieved.
There was plenty of Continental hoggs selling around the 200p/kg mark. Beltex hoggs topped the market at 218p/kg from Kevin Purtill of Hindley Green with Texels from the same good home selling to 210p/kg. The trade topped at £104 for 52kg Texel from RS & IM Kellet of Mill House Farm with heavy weight Charollais from the same home to £103.
There was more trade for hill bred hoggs today with 47kg Mules and Mashams from FK & F Woodhouse of Fell End selling to £85, with 40kg Swaledale ram hoggs selling to £70 from KM & KJ Curwen of Marshaw Farm.
Cast Sheep
There was a smaller entry of cast ewes forward today, but selling to a sharper trade than previously seen as all types were eagerly bid for. Mules sold to a top of £71, twice, from MJ & K Ayrton of Bambers Farm and from T & ME Longton & Son of Lee End Farm. Texel cross ewes also topped at £71 MJ & K Ayrton.
Hill bred sheep saw Herdwicks sell to £50 from T & ME Longton & Son and Swaledales sold to £48 from KM & KJ Curwen of Marshaw Farm.
